Frequently Asked Questions

Important to Customers

Hiring Potomac Writing Service – Are These Your Questions?

Q: “You say you guarantee my satisfaction with your writing. How exactly does that guarantee work?"

A: The overwhelming majority of our clients are pleased and happy with their content when they receive it from us. But if you are not, we will rewrite it according to your specific feedback, entirely at our expense (see our project terms and conditions for one important exception to that).

Q: “What about sales? Do you guarantee that your copy will get the sales/marketing/inquiry results that I want?”

A: No.

Q: “Why not?”

A: There are many factors in your business, advertising, marketing and promotional efforts – the overall markets, pricing, customer lists you may be promoting to, demand and interest, consumer preferences, major events – that we cannot control.

Therefore, while we can and do guarantee your satisfaction with what we prepare for you before you test or use it, we do not promise (and cannot guarantee) specific “results”.

Q: “Then how do I know the content you prepare will produce better results than what I am currently using? How do I know that it will even be profitable?”

A: You don’t . . . And neither do we.     What you are purchasing when you hire any professional copywriter or writer is the increased likelihood that their content will outperform your present copy, based on their experience. And that is all.

Experienced marketers know that this is part of the risk of doing business. Less-experienced (or less-aware) marketers and business owners usually don’t understand this, and often have unrealistic expectations as a result. The reality is that no one has a guaranteed “formula” for exceeding your present results, or guaranteeing a certain level of performance in written materials.

Q: “Will you write content for me for nothing up front but a nice share of the profits if your copy works?"

A: No. Every project assignment requires an advance retainer, and we do not begin work without it.

Q: “Do you never, then, work for a royalty or additional incentive?”

A: We LOVE royalty and other add-on compensation arrangements! But those royalties and payouts are paid as a performance bonus, not in lieu of an up-front fee. If we were to prepare copy for no up-front fee, we would be in effect investing in your company/business (investing our time and effort without receiving any direct compensation at that time), and we are not a venture capital investor or speculator, we are content producers.

Q: “But why would a client pay you an up-front fee PLUS a royalty or other incentive payout?”

A: “To give us a financial incentive to think about their product/service/promotion after the content is written – and to look for ways to improve the copy on an ongoing basis, so that it continues to generate a profitable response (see below).

Q: “If you write something for me and I need occasional tweaks, or want to do some tests with various versions, will you write that for me at no additional charge?”

A: If the promotion is currently in use, and we are being paid a royalty or other incentive fee, we will make those tweaks, etc. at no additional charge. After all, in that instance we have a financial interest in keeping our content as the piece you want to continue to use.

On the other hand, if the promotion is not paying us a royalty or other incentive fee, there will be an additional fee to do more writing on your piece beyond what was originally contracted for.

Q: “The content you produce for me - Who will retain the copyrights? Can I claim it is my own? Do you require a byline?”

A: All content – of whatever type – we prepare for you is 100% your own, and you own all rights to its use. We retain no rights of use whatsoever. You can use it in whatever way you like, and can claim that it is yours. Unless we have secured your approval to do so, we will not use our own names in it nor do we require a byline or attribution.

We would ask your understanding, however, that we will retain a copy of your material(s) for future reference in case you contact us, and for future distribution to potential clients as a part of our completed projects portfolio.
